Re-architecting a fragile dispatch platform under load
A dispatch system buckling at peak was re-architected around clear service boundaries and a sane data model — turning firefighting into predictable delivery.
Illustrative example — a fuller written case study lands here soon.
- Peak-load outages
- Eliminated
- Deploy confidence
- Restored
- Decision record
- Owned in-house
The context
The operator ran a business-critical dispatch platform that had grown organically for years. Peak load caused outages, changes were risky, and every incident pulled the whole team in. Leadership needed to know whether to rebuild or repair.
What I did
- Mapped the real failure modes against load, not the assumed ones
- Designed clear service boundaries and a corrected data model
- Sequenced a strangler-fig migration that kept the business running
- Wrote the decisions down so the in-house team could own them
